EventManagerTM by Kent House now includes invitation management Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Contributed by: Kenthouse

Industry NewsUK software developer Kent House has announced that its award winning online event management software EventManagerTM now offers conference and event organisers the facility to issue and manage invitations (RSVP feature). Invitation management enables organisers to take control of the promotion of their event. Organisers can send event invitations to previous attendees or delegates already in the system, and add or import new contacts. Records of invitations sent and statistics on the status of reply enable the user to track their attendees and chase invitations if necessary. It is simple and easy to create invitations. These can include ā€˜add to calendar’ options in Google Calendar and Lotus Notes. Additional information on the event and access to presentations or event documents can be added. The invitation tracking screen shows users a list of invites sent and gives the options to chase invites. It is clear to see which invitees have made bookings and which have not yet indicated the attendance status. The clever tool also enables you to categorise delegates so you are always in the know as to who is attending and the role they have at your event. EventManagerTM has, over the last seven years, helped manage more than 2 million bookings across tens of thousands of events. It is the most widely used online registration and event management software within the UK National Health Service (NHS), as well as being used by commercial companies and the not-for-profit sector. Announcing the latest development, Kevin Holdridge (Kent House Managing Director) said ā€œI’m very pleased with this latest feature addition. We know that EventManagerTM is the most cost-effective online event management software on the market, and that our customers find it simple to use but powerful. RSVP is one of several carefully chosen new features that we will be introducing this summer in order to retain our edge over competing products and to keep our customers delighted.ā€ Kent House Address: The Innovation Centre, Keele University Science Park, Keele, Staffordshire ST5 5NB UK www.kenthouse.com Telephone: 0845 638 0700 Email: mail@kenthouse.com

Conference Announcement and Call for Papers

Researching Coastal and Resort Destination Management: Cultures and Histories of Tourism

19th – 20th October 2009
Girona, Catalonia, Spain

2009 marks the hundredth anniversary of the formal designation of the Costa Brava, a title and destination region that has become synonomous with the emergence and growth of ā€˜mass’ tourism over the past century. The region today faces many challenges including maintaining tourist markets against competing destinations alongside environmental concerns.

This conference is therefore extremely timely in its aim of bringing together researchers who share interests in coastal and resort destination policy, planning and management in relation to culture(s) and histories of tourism.

These research areas are also clearly relevant to professionals and policy makers in destination management and the conference will provide a unique opportunity for researchers to share leading edge ideas, innovations and critical thinking with the professional destination manager participants at the European Union of Tourist Officers (EUTO) Study Visit to Catalunya which coincides with the conference. There will also be opportunities for delegates to participate in parts of the EUTO programme.

Conference Themes
The conference welcomes proposals for papers that address the development of tourism in coastal regions and resorts. Proposals might, for example address:

• Creative uses of cultural, historical and heritage resources for tourism in coastal settings

• Cultural events and festivals as animators of coastal resorts

• Transnational approaches to and conceptions of destination policy and planning in coastal contexts

• Community participation in coastal resort development

• Building sustainable partnerships and stakeholder relationships between tourism, culture and heritage in coastal destinations

• Competitive (dis)advantage, new tourist markets and coastal destinations

• New and emerging technologies in coastal destination representation and marketing

• Coastal destination image and branding

The conference organisers also welcome proposals for papers that address theoretical and applied issues and themes relating to destination management in the coastal contexts of Catalonia and the Costa Brava in particular: Such themes include:

• Tourism and Catalan identity - tensions between the standard international offer and the marketing of the 'local' and regional or 'nation without a state'

• Representing the Costa Brava: changing images over time, and the creation, marketing and modification of a 'brand'

• Tourism and the Catalan language - problem or asset?

• The labour force in Catalan tourism: Catalans and 'others'
• Tourist markets to Catalunya and the (formal and informal) organisation of private and public space: e.g. hotels, beaches, squares

• Issues surrounding second home ownership, property markets and ā€˜new’ resident communities in the Costa Brava

If you wish to submit a paper proposal, please send a 300-word abstract with full address and institutional affiliation details as an electronic file to Dr. Philip Long p.e.long@leedsmet.ac.uk

The deadline for the reception of abstracts is 31st of July 2009.

New CoursesThe MSc International Event Management is a new programme which has been developed in recognition of the increasingly vital role of the events industry to tourism development and the resultant need to improve the professionalism of this key industry. This programme benefits from the over 40 years of teaching and research expertise of staff in the School of Management which is a leading provider of internationally recognised postgraduate degrees in the specialist fields of hospitality, tourism, food, retail and health care management. This postgraduate degree in international event management therefore provides a fitting complement to the School’s existing suite of management programmes. In addition, the School of Management is well placed to extend its portfolio to include international event management due to its geographical location in the historic city of Guildford, just a 35 minute train journey away from London which is host to a number of major national and international events and festivals. Through living and studying in commuting distance from one of the most exciting international cities, students pursuing this programme will have the unique opportunity of benefitting from the world-class experience of the wider business community and will be able to have practical experience of the many events and festivals that regularly take place. Resorting to the Coast:
Tourism, Heritage and Cultures of the Seaside

25—29 June 2009
Blackpool, United Kingdom

organised by
Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change
&
Institute of Northern Studies
Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom

www.tourism-culture.com

Globally, coastlines are arguably the most important sites for tourist activity and tourism development. The various combinations of sea and shore have become highly popular and successful attractions, and a majority of the world’s leisure tourists cling to these liminal spaces at the margins of the land. The lure of the ā€˜seaside’, the beach, and the resorts which have evolved to service and entertain tourists, is immensely powerful, reflecting a long standing but ever-changing relationship between humans and the oceans. The dominance of coastal tourism within the modern period has generated a wealth of issues which this conference seeks to address, including: The patterns and trends in how tourists mobilise the resources of sea, sand and shore; Ways in which coastal communities have adapted to tourism; Environmental degradation and regeneration of coastal regions and marine ecologies; The historical forms, structures and aesthetics of ā€˜seaside’ resorts; Regeneration of ā€˜historic’ resorts; Continuing multi-national development of ā€˜pristine’ coastlines; Inclusivities and exclusivities in coastal resorts; Changing beach and seaside holiday ā€˜traditions’.

In addressing such issues this major international and multi-disciplinary conference seeks to promote dialogue across disciplinary boundaries on a global stage. We therefore welcome papers from: anthropology, archaeology, architecture, art and design history, cultural geography, cultural studies, ethnology and folklore, history, heritage studies, landscape studies, linguistics, museum studies, political science, sociology, tourism studies and urban/spatial planning. The event will seek to draw upon ideas, cases and best practice from international scholars and help develop new understandings of the relationships between tourism and the coast. It will also provide a major networking opportunity for international scholars, policy makers and professionals.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Key themes of interest to the conference include:

• Histories of coastal tourism developments and resorts;
• Regeneration of coastal economies;
• Social and environmental impacts of coastal developments;
• Representations of seaside holidays in popular culture;
• Worker migrations to coastal sites;
• Beach behaviours and traditions;
• Myths of the sea and coastal communities;
• Coastal resort art and architecture;
• Tourist coastal colonies.

Please submit a 300 word abstract including title and full contact details as an electronic file to the conference manager Daniela Carl (ctcc@leedsmet.ac.uk). You may submit your abstract as soon as possible but no later than 2nd February 2009.
